The Rockland County Police and Public Safety Academy offers the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Basic Course for Police Officers Refresher, usually in conjunction with the biannual Basic Course for Police Officers.

Police Officers who were previously certified in New York State but had a break in service may be eligible for the Refresher course.

An officer who served less than two years would need to refresh after a break of more than two years.

An officer who served more than two years would need to refresh after a break of more than four years.

Refreshing is only available for officers who have had a break in service of less than ten years. Officers who        have had a break in service of more than ten years must retake the entire Basic Course for Police Officers to        obtain valid certification.

The refresher program consists of a number of written and practical proficiency exams as well as a minimum of 84 hours of instructional updates.  Refreshing students who do not pass the proficiency exams on the first attempt are given the opportunity to attend the relevant blocks of instruction in the Basic Course.  Refresher Students must complete 80 hours of Field Training before they are fully certified.
